MEDIUM ROAST
The only coffee grown in the United States, Kona Coffee is found in a very small region of Hawaii Island, on steep slopes of mineral-rich volcanic rock and soil of the Mauna Loa and Hualalai volcanoes (both still active). The morning sun with afternoon clouds and gentle rain, combine with cool overnight temperatures to provide the best environment for this rich tasting coffee.
Kona is harvested between October and January, washed, and sun-dried, and in general has a bright, vibrant, and mild acidity.
Since coffee was introduced to Hawaii in the early 1800's, the Kona region has emerged as the premier coffee producing area on the islands, while sugar and fruit production dominated most hawaiian farming and plantations for a century. There are other exceptional coffees grown in Hawaii, but Kona stands out as the most mature and unique taste.
The Kona coffee zone is small compared to most coffee regions of the world, located in a five-mile stretch of the North and South Districts of Kailua-Kona. There are approximately 600-800 (mostly small, <5 acre) Kona coffee farms, producing a total of only 3-4 million pounds of green beans annually.
Our Kona Coffee is 100% Kona, but for many larger sellers, in order to have Kona available to as many coffee drinkers as possible, a considerable portion of the production is mixed with other beans to create a "Kona Coffee Blend," Buyer beware, as sometimes the blends contain as little as only 10% Kona, a testament to the powerful flavor of the Kona bean, but also a potential alteration to the exceptional Kona flavor profile.
